Four ways in
Most technical SAR units (Mountain Rescue Association teams, high-angle and cave squads) demand years of prerequisites. These four keep an operational tier open to newcomers for ground sweeps, hasty searches, staging, and line searching.
In most states the county sheriff holds the statutory mandate for inland search and rescue and keeps a volunteer search posse or auxiliary ground unit. Entry-level members pass a criminal background check and complete FEMA ICS-100 and IS-700, then serve as sweep searchers while team leads handle navigation and medical care.
Run under FEMA / Citizen Corps, CERT trains local volunteers in basic disaster response, light search and rescue, and staging-area management. When law enforcement needs organised, non-technical people for a large missing-person search — a child, a wanderer with dementia — the local CERT unit is usually who gets the call.
CAP is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force; its ground search teams take adult members with minimal prior background. Volunteers earn General Emergency Services (GES) and progress into ground sweeps, radio direction finding, and base-camp operations.
Independent 501(c)(3) teams tier their qualifications: SARTECH III / base-camp support covers staging, perimeter logging, basic radio, and simple visual grid searches; SARTECH II adds rough-terrain navigation and overnight deployment.

Verification & Trust Safeguards
Your license and each certification are checked by a 3-W reviewer against the issuing body after registration and before your profile or documents are forwarded to any employer, contractor, or agency. Unverified profiles are never visible to employers.
Licensure and certification uploads are encrypted in transit (TLS), stored in a directory blocked from direct web access, served only to you, the reviewer, and — after you accept a deployment or an interview invitation — that specific contractor, with every admin access recorded in an audit log. We store credentials, not patient records: nothing you upload is protected health information, and we never ask for it.
Search visibility, contact release, crew-call texts, and the shareable credential manifest are each switched on by you, per feature, from your account — and each can be switched off just as easily. Delete your account and your documents go with it.
